This position is to be filled from October 01 2010 for a period of five years.
The Museum Moderner Kunst Stiftung Ludwig Wien (MUMOK, “Museum of Modern Art Foundation Ludwig Vienna”) is the Austrian Federal Museum for international art of the 20th and 21st centuries and regards itself as a discursive museum based on scientific principles with an explicit educational mandate in the fields of exhibitions, events and publications.
Consistent with paragraph 2 (1) of the Museum Regulations of January 11 2002 the purpose of the MUMOK is to apply state-of-the-art scientific and museological knowledge and methods to the conservation, development and research of the collection it has accumulated since its establishment and to promote public appreciation of it.
Core competence of MUMOK includes works of the classic modern tendency; objective, social, abstract and performative art of the 1960s and 70s and other international works of the visual arts. Later parts of the collection notable for their defining contribution are particularly the large-sized sculptures and installations from the 1980s onwards and a photographic, film and video collection.
The Director of the Museum Moderner Kunst Stiftung Ludwig Wien (MUMOK, “Museum of Modern Art Foundation Ludwig Vienna”) is responsible for the scientific/artistic as well as overall organisation. He/she sets the agenda and has full charge of personnel, organisational and financial matters as well as for supervision of all sections of MUMOK. The Director represents the museum in public and is therefore responsible for the museum's public image.
A major challenge for the new management of MUMOK will be the integrated development of the museum and its national and international positioning in the public's perception to facilitate access to as wide a public as possible and to increase awareness for the role of MUMOK as a significant cultural and sociopolitical element.
A personality is therefore sought who recognises the importance of teamwork and understands the promotion of the cultural and social significance of modern and contemporary art to be part of an all-embracing educational role.
